An Interview with a Farmer

Talea Hekman-Taylor

All of us here at the Montgomery Place Orchards Farmstand love listening to Talea’s stories about her life as a farmer and how she came to be here in the Hudson Valley, running a farm with her husband Doug, for thirty years.  But at the market and at the farm there is always always something that needs doing, and we are mostly too busy to really get to pause and hear her tell us all about it in her own words. Lucky for us, one of our veteran farm workers, Marnie MacGregor, created this short interview with Talea in June of 2015. If offers a little bit of history, both of the farm and of Talea’s family, and we thought you might like listening to it when you have few minutes.

Read Marnie’s description of her work right below…enjoy!!!

This is an interview I conducted with Talea June of 2015  as part of an intensive workshop I did at the Oral History Summer School in Hudson, NY. This is just roughly 15 minutes of an hour long conversation I had with Talea about growing up in Michigan and Pennsylvania, her Dutch heritage, and rejuvenating the farm on the Montgomery Place property. Since the time of this interview the Montgomery Place Estate property has changed hands from Historic Hudson Valley, to those of Bard College.
